It took Bollywood nearly 12 years to take notice of Pankaj Tripathi and still so, the star studded award ceremonies fail to reward his merits. But the actor holds no grudges and believes that it’s all a part of the game. It was in 2004 that actor Pankaj Tripathi made his Bollywood debut with a minor role in the movie run. However, it was his role in Gangs of Wasseypur that finally got the audience to sit up and take note of his talent.
Here, we present before you some of the 5 amazing performances by Pankaj Tripathi that you should watch before the release of Mirzapur:
In this hit, Tripathi got the biggest share of laughs. When asked how the ghost Stree knows the name of all her victims, he says, “sabka Aadhar link hai uske paas”. This joke both funny and contemporary was not in the script. Tripathi improvised it. These value adds are something of a habit for the actor.
Fukrey (2013) and Fukrey Returns (2017)
Playing the affable Pandit in both these blockbusters, Tripathi decided to pepper his dialogues with English words like “disgusting”, “vulgar” and “cheating”. The sudden dissonance only amplified the humor.
In one of the many climaxes of this series, Tripathi delivers a sermon where he invokes Freud and Hindu scripture with equal persuasiveness. He played the role of third father of Ganesh Gaitonde, who used to deliver sermons.
Gangs of Wasseypur
He was ultimately given a meatier stab at Bollywood in Gangs of Wasseypur(2012). He played the butcher Sultan Qureshi in the two part film and even in a cast of reputed performers, his proficiency was easy to notice. The actor agrees that Wasseypur was a turning point.
He won the National Film Award- Special Mention for his role in ‘Newton’ that was India’s official entry to the Oscars. He played the role of cynical CRPF commandant Aatma Singh. He heads the security forces and takes charge of the film almost as equally as Rajkumar Rao. Tripathi matches Rao frame to frame and scene to scene. He understands the unpredictability of his character Aatma, incredibly delivering even the simplest of dialouges and the plainest of expressions.
There are a total of 41 movies he has done till date including all the big and small roles and there are several upcoming movies lined up too. He has done big budgets films such as Dabangg 2, Gunday, Singham returns and Dilwale, along with some very famous stars of Bollywood. Now the only thing his fans are waiting for: is the release of Mirzapur, which by trailers look just astonishing. His portrayal as Kaleen Bhaiya appears to be just superb.
