DCEU’s underwater world of superheroes will be going in full action swing in the upcoming Aquaman film. The film features a major portion of all the superheroes living underwater. One of the underwater warrior known as Mera played by the actress Amber Heard, who first debuted in Justice League will be returning as a full-fledged character in Aquaman.
In the comics, Mera has remained the queen of the seas, but actress Amber Heard revealed some key details about the character – “She’s a warrior who was raised by the queen of Atlantis before she passed. We meet Mera after the queen has long since left and she’s been raised to take over as queen her whole life,” Heard said. “She’s been raised to serve her kingdom and rule over Atlantis with King Orm (Patrick Wilson).”
This is quite different from the comics, while in the comics, Mera’s story begins with her developing a relationship with Aquaman, despite being each other’s rivals initially. While, this also seems the case in the movie as well, but she will be engaged to Orm, known as Ocean Master in the comics.
Other than this change, her other characteristics will be straight out of the comics. “She’s very disciplined and almost militaristic,” Heard said. “She’s fully dedicated to saving her nation and that serves as an impetus to go to the surface world and elicit help from Arthur who’s the polar opposite of Mera — he lives in the moment, he’s confused about his identity, he lacks the purpose and focus that Mera has, which makes them an unlikely duo. But it’s that disparity that makes a nuanced relationship between them. Where one is strong the other is weak and those differences are a conduit for their bonding.”
Also, her powers in the movie will also straight out of the comics. “So there’s an old-fashioned hierarchy in their society that they rule Atlantis,” Heard said. “There are different tribe communities within the social hierarchy. Some of us have certain superpowers and I have hydrokinesis — not just making bubbles.” Heard said. In the comics, Mera has the unique ability to form “hard water” objects, as well as super strength and powers related to her adaptation to living under water. She has been shown to be powerful enough to control, albeit briefly, huge amounts of water, enough to pull an entire army out to sea. Due to her intended role as an infiltrator and a killer, Mera received extensive training in Xebel (Dimension Aqua), becoming a formidable opponent on her own.
While her appearance in the Justice League was sort of a glimpse just a part of her, we should expect more development in the character in the Aquaman.
