Every DC comics fanboy like me must have had the feeling of disappointment whenever a DC movie fails to live up to the expectations, whereas the world keeps on praising Marvel. DC fans have seen harsh times as we have been waiting enough for the worthy successor of Wonder Woman. So, let’s find out whether Aquaman lives up to those expectations or not?
Aquaman Review –
You must be familiar with superhero Aquaman as he was formally introduced in the Justice League. For those who haven’t seen Justice League because of its pretty bad reviews, on the contrary, Aquaman is a superhero and king of Atlantis who has the power to interact with sea creatures and control water along with some basic superhuman abilities like being bulletproof, having superhuman strength, badassery, wit and hell of a body.
The story of Aquaman is downright comic bookish where he is born out of love of his father the lighthouse keeper and mother, the queen of Atlantis. Born with superpowers he is the chosen one to rule the world beneath the sea, Atlantis, but he will have to take down his half-brother King ORM who wants to conquer the surface dwellers for the destruction they have caused to the oceans. The only way to stop his brother is to get his hands on the Trident of King Atlan which has been hidden for centuries. The movie is basically a combination of both Indiana Jones and Game of Thrones. For Aquaman Jason Mamoa aka Khal Drogo is reprising his role and this time around his character has been more layered out and feels humane as compared to Justice League where he was shown as more of a short-tempered dude. Joining him in his conquest to find the trident and dethroning King Orm is Queen Mera played by Amber Heard. Her presence in the movie is as significant as Aquaman. She is the one who saves Aquaman from ass whooping on several occasions. However, the true hero of the movie is director James Wan because he leaves in awe of the world he has created underwater. His vivid imagination of sea creatures and underwater fight scenes are the treat to watch.
Apart from the good parts, it is impossible for a DC movie to go without cons. Just Kidding! Though it has some cons. So, let’s get into those.
Starting with the villains, the villains were not up to the mark. If we compare the villains in the movie with those in the Marvel Universe, you will know the difference. Let’s pick an instance of Thor and Loki from the movie Thor because it was the same case there. Loki was a better villain than King Orm because his character was more explored in the movie than King Orm. In Aquaman, King Orm’s character was just shown as a selfish King who just wanted the throne to overpower both sea and land. I think more of his character could be explored.
Another villain which was wasted in the movie was Black Manta. Though his origin was shown, there is more to the character that could have been explored. It seems that the only purpose for Black Manta was just to set the sequel of Aquaman. Another negative point was the runtime of the film. Many sequences were elongated such as the Trident hunt and the Duel between Aquaman and King Orm. That duel could have been avoided and search for Trident could have been shortened.
Overall, Aquaman is just like Wonder Woman which has worked as a lift up for the DC Universe. Do watch it for amazing visuals and powerful portray of Aquaman by Jason Mamao.
