Laurence Fishburne’s character in Ant-Man 2 – Bill Foster who is well known as Goliath in comics is a size changing hero. But when it comes to the movies Marvel has a habit of shaking things up with the characters.
In the Ant-Man and the Wasp(Ant-Man 2), we’ll meet Dr. Foster as a peer of Hank Pym’s in Ant-Man & the Wasp. We’ve already seen a poster for Bill Foster, proving he may be a bigger character than we had expected. Like many of the other new characters, there’s still a lot of mystery surrounding Fishburne’s role. But what’s clear is he won’t exactly be a fan of Hank Pym.
Director Peyton Reed talked about Fosters role in the movie and then telling us about the resemblance to the comics and how much the character would be changed from comics he said – “Bill’s a former colleague who really was involved early on with Pym in a thing called Project Goliath and their lives have taken these kinds of divergent paths and when we find Bill Foster in this movie, he is teaching quantum physics at Berkeley. I also liked the idea of grounding — because the movie takes place in San Francisco and it’s not just for stunts and scenery. Like, Berkeley, that’s an important thing in the movie. Is that one guy is gone — they were both involved with S.H.I.E.L.D at some point, but one guy’s sort of stepped away and taken a more academic approach.”
It doesn’t fit that Bill Foster would be one of the villains, but as Ant-Man and the Wasp (Ant-Man 2) movie seems to be filled with antagonists, he looks more like a roadblock to the team than a full-fledged villain.
“I liked the idea from the beginning, especially having Michael and Laurence Fishburne, of these guys who are sort of scientific rivals and when we’re — that’s really the rivalry and we always talked about sort of a Steve Jobs/Bill Gates kind of thing. Two scientists who are both geniuses in quantum physics and quantum mechanics, but maybe have a Mac/PC rivalry about what the approach to delving into the Quantum Realm might be. So, I also like the idea of with those two actors, especially with Fishburne, like, someone who’s gonna actually go toe-to-toe with Michael in terms of who’s the smartest guy in the room? That struck me as something really fun and you know, to give Hank Pym a foil in this movie in that way.”
Whether he turns out to be a hero or a villain or simply an antagonist, we’ll get to know shortly as the film releases this July. Also, taking on a classic character like the Goliath may also open the door to a film where we see Hank, Bill and Janet work together in the Cold War Era in the S.H.I.E.L.D.
