This confirmation was revealed by James Dyer of Empire Magazine after the panel at Star Wars Celebration. According to James Dyer, J.J. Abrams was happy to hear that this news wasn’t spoiled before the release of the trailer. Check out the tweet by Dyer below:

This return of the iconic villain played by Ian McDiarmid is going to start up the theories and speculation train of the fans. Apart from the confirmation by Abrams, the actor also appeared on the stage after the trailer release. After the iconic laugh at the end of the trailer, McDiarmid said, in Sith Lord’s voice, “Roll it again”, followed by the cheers from the audience.

Abrams shed some light on the movie details. During the panel at Star Wars celebration, J.J. Abrams said, “The movie doesn’t pick up immediately after the last film. Some time has passed. This movie is an adventure the group goes on together. One of the great things about getting to work on the movie is the dynamic between all of the characters. They’re amazing together, and it’s something I’m excited for you all to see.”

Although, at the current moment, we don’t have any information about the role of the Sith Lord in the movie. But I am sure that we will get to know the details about it as we get closer to the release date of Star Wars: Episode IX.

Star Wars: Episode IX The Rise of Skywalker hits the theatres on December 20th, 2019.
