House of Cards is one of those series that gave Netflix a firm hold over the entertainment market. The series became the fan favourite from the get-go with the presence of actors like Kevin Spacey. The viewers were hooked to his brutal portrayal of Frank Underwood, a power-hungry person who can go to any limits to get what he wants. The show spanning over five seasons focused on the plot where Frank takes you on a long journey as he exacts his vengeance on those he feels wronged him – that is, his cabinet members including the President of the United States himself.
Now, the show is ready to return for the final season with Claire (Robin Wright), the wife of Frank at the helm and to take control of things in her hands. She has been the popular character, and her journey as the one who controls her surroundings in a manipulative way has always held audience’s interest. Keeping in mind, the events of past few months which led to the removal of Kevin Spacey from the series now show will entirely focus on the Claire and her hunger for power. The teaser trailer for House of Cards season 6 gives a glimpse of White House with Claire sitting in the President’s chair. Her words “We’re just getting started” near the end of video lends much-needed power to the show.
Going through the performance of series, the first four seasons had a pretty fantastic run, and each one left the audience wanting more as methodical and vicious Frank Underwood along with his equally manipulative, yet an ambiguous wife, Claire take Washington by storm through climbing the hierarchical ladder to power.
However, the fifth season was full of bumps and was not able to satisfy the hunger of both audiences and critics. The show took a dip just after the first episode, and characters, Mark Usher and Jane Davis mostly sidelined the main protagonist Frank & Claire. It was not able to recover from this, and by the end, it felt like a mistreated season.
As the mediocre performance of House of Cards season 5 was not enough, the reports of sexual abuse against Kevin Spacey tarnished the whole series. As more and more people came out against him, the future of show looked bleak. With MeToo movement taking Hollywood by storm, Netflix took the bold step of firing Kevin Spacey from the series. The decision undoubtedly shook the fan community of the loved political thriller series but was welcomed by everyone. So, Netflix decided to put Robin Wright at the centre of the story in season 6 and give the audience a show which they can love and binge watch.
After so many hiccups it will be interesting to see how beautifully they proceed the story and will Claire be able to replace the dominant character of Frank Underwood.
