Avengers: Infinity War, at last, unlocked the biggest mystery – The Soul Stone. But to be honest, fans were looking for a fulfilling reveal but it turns out it wasn’t that fulfilling. After all the work it took to obtain it, we didn’t see much of it in action. But there was one instance Thanos used the Soul Stone’s power — and most fans probably missed it!
Avengers: Infinity War’s home release contained a commentary track of directors and the writers. During the commentary track, director Joe Russo reveals that Thanos employed the Soul Stone’s power during the villain’s fight with Doctor Strange, on Titan. As The Russo Brothers and writer Christopher McFeely explain:
“McFeely: Joe and Anthony had a peculiar obsession with “The Raven.”
Joe: I did. I loved “The Raven” growing up. And I wanted to see a scene in this movie where Thanos’ full powers went against Doctor Strange’s full powers… And this is one of the only uses of the Soul Stone in the film.
Joe: Right there.
Anthony: Until its final use.”
The scene in the discussion is when Doctor Strange makes multiple copies of himself to distract Thanos, and attempts to snare the Mad Titan in a net of energy bands. Thanos blasts the copies away using the Power Stone but manages to identify the real Strange by using the Soul Stone to knock The Sorcerer Supreme’s Astral Form lose. That causes Strange to have to literally and spiritually pull it together. In the heat of the battle, most fans probably weren’t keeping the close eye on which Infinity Stones were lighting up as Thanos took Strange apart.
Also, in the commentary that there was a pattern to Titan’s rising madness. Whenever the Mad Titan obtained a new stone, the Russos made sure he used it in the next fight he fought in. And so, after discovering the Soul Stone on Vormir, Thanos teleported to Titan and got to try out the stone first-hand. This was the only other time Soul Stone’s power was used in the fight, the second time obviously was the one he did his ‘great snap’.
Avengers: Infinity War is now available on digital platforms and lands on DVD and Blu-ray on Tuesday, Aug. 14. Ant-Man and the Wasp is now in theatres.
