Marvel Studio’s head – Kevin Feige has confirmed a long run Ant-Man fan theory and observation that Janet van Dyne was there when Scott Lang was shrunk down to the Quantum Realm.
After Scott tried to sabotage Yellow Jacket’s suit, he failed, and then he shrunk down to subatomic level to successfully sabotage his suit. As Scott shrunk down, he entered the Quantum Realm and there in the light we can see the faint shadow of the original Wasp, Janet van Dyne.
Janet is officially in the Ant-Man and the Wasp, but Feige confirmed that the faint shadow was indeed Janet van Dyne. After the events of the civil war, Scott is facing the consequences of joining Team Captain America. Ant-Man and the Wasp will see Hope Van Dyne donning the suit of the Wasp and both Ant-Man and the Wasp getting into the Quantum Realm to save Janet and therefore the cameo was in the Ant-Man and the Wasp, to join to it to its sequel.
Some critics shut down these assumptions initially by saying that it was some light trick, but in the Ant-Man and the Wasp press conference, Feige confirmed that it was the original Wasp. “In the first film it was, we got a glimpse of it for people who like to go through frame-by-frame, there was a little silhouette of Janet as the Wasp in there, which is a big story element in this movie,” Feige said.
This isn’t the only time Janet appeared in the movie; she also appeared in a flashback where the original Ant-Man and the Wasp team up to diffuse a bomb. After they were unsuccessful, Wasp went subatomic to diffuse the bomb and enter into Quantum Realm. We don’t know how Janet has changed living in the Quantum Realm for so many years, but we do know that saving of Janet van Dyne was a success as Michelle Pfeiffer aka Janet van Dyne was seen on Avengers 4 sets.
Quantum Realm was introduced in Ant-Man and the Wasp, where it was told that Quantum Realm could be accessed by shrinking down to sub-atomic levels. Also, Doctor Strange visited the realm through magic. Scott Derrickson, Doctor Strange director, has confirmed that Quantum Realm is shown among the different dimensions that Stephen Strange visits when the Ancient One first introduces him to magic. Quantum Realm is a mysterious dimension and in the realm “all concepts of time and space become irrelevant,” according to Hank Pym.
