Manto is an upcoming biographical film based on the greatest short stories writer Saadat Hasan Manto and is performed by the most esteemed and award-winning actor of Indian cinema ‘Nawazuddin Siddiqui’. The movie is directed by an A-list actor and director, Nandita Dass and is one of the leading figures in the Indian Film Industry. Nandita is acclaimed for her roles and performances in the most celebrated films like Bawandar, Pita, Earth and Before the rains.
Manto, as per Viacom Motion Pictures, follows the most tumultuous four years in the life of Manto and that of the two countries he inhabits – India and Pakistan. In Bombay’s seedy-shiny film world, Manto and his stories are widely read and accepted. But as sectarian violence engulfs the nation, he makes the difficult choice of leaving his beloved Bombay. In Lahore, he finds himself bereft of friends and unable to find takers for his writings. His increasing alcoholism leads him into a downward spiral. Through all of this, he continues to write prolifically, without dilution. This is the tale of two emerging nations, two faltering cities, and one man who tries to make sense of it all.
The teaser showcased Nawazzudin Siddiqui enacting as Saadat Hasan Manto. Nawaz has so well described the plight, courage, and bravery of the latter that it will definitely be accepted by the audience as a source of inspiration. Every crisp dialogue, the clean phase of the act and his control over the character displayed how Manto reacted when he was confronted with the adversities of unacceptance and when his writings were turned down and not accepted by Indian-Pak society as he used to write the untouched truths about the taboos of Indo-Pak society.
Saadat Hasan Manto was a British-Indian author, playwright, and writer known for his literary works like a collection of short stories, essays, personal sketches, a novel and has written some radio plays. He was popular for writing scandalous and awful truths which no one dared to talk about them. He wrote as he saw, he spoke as he thought. In his writings, he often commented, ‘If you find my writings dirty, the society you are living in is dirty’.
