Captain Marvel – How Nick Fury loses his Eye(Possible Captain Marvel Spoilers)

Nick Fury and Captain Marvel Photo

In Captain Marvel, Nick Fury is shown with both his eyes, but as we know, he loses one gradually. To add on this, since Captain Marvel is set in the 1990s, the movie can very well answer the question of how he lost his eye. If it is included in the movie, we have a candidate of who might have caused the loss of his good left eye. Spoiler Warning – The following article can contain possible Captain Marvel Spoilers, so read the article at your own risk.

From the first appearance of Nick Fury in Iron Man in 2008, he has perfectly done the Fury’s character as in the comics. This was only possible for Jackson, to recreate the comic book, Nick Fury, as Mark Millar designed Fury for the same. After his first appearance, for almost a decade, he’d been a consistent character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, who helped the superheroes either by giving them any intel he knows, will help them or by giving them motivational speeches like on teamwork. Moreover, he’s helped many superheroes to start and create their career as a superhero, out of which Carol Danvers ala Captain Marvel was the first one.

After becoming a part of the superhero world, he spends several years in action to save the day. However, in these battles, he learnt various lessons, out of which the famous one is the loss of his left eye. We’ve never seen how he loses his good eye, but that could have happened during the time of Captain Marvel.

Things we know about Nick Fury’s Past

Nick Fury Picture

Nick Fury, in the beginning, was a part of the U.S. Army as an officer. Further, he became a spy or spying agent in CIA during the Cold War, after which he was recruited by Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division aka the S.H.E.I.L.D. He is described as a low, entry-level agent in the 1990s, so he is far away from the position that we see him at, in the present day. Jackson told EW that he hadn’t been such a pessimist from the start. He respects the people who are above him, more than the Nick Fury of the present time. He even told that he’s got a bit of humour in his young days.

In Nick Fury’s life, he went through a life-changing event which cost him his left eye. The films have never shown it, how it happened, but Fury has been without his left eye since the first time we see him. But in Captain Marvel, he is shown having both his eye and hence, he doesn’t have his trademark eyepatch on his left eye. It shows that at some point in this decade when he works in S.H.I.E.L.D., Nick Fury learns a valuable lesson of life but it came with a price. The loss is the result of trusting someone close to him at that point in time and maybe he was close to his boss or his mentor.

The Skrull Leader Talos is Nick Fury’s Boss(Possible Captain Marvel Spoilers)

Ben Mendelsohn Photo

Ben Mendelsohn plays the role of the shape-shifting alien race Skrulls’ leader Talos in Captain Marvel. The images that reveal the first look of Skrulls in the movie just like they look in comics, traditional green portrayal, also reveal some additional details about the role of the character. It is speculated that Talos will go undercover within S.H.I.E.L.D. in his human form. Alexander Pierce will be the director of the S.H.I.E.L.D. since Nick Fury has not yet reached the level of being a director.

Till he is promoted as the director of the S.H.I.E.L.D., he has to answer to his boss, which in Captain Marvel is Talos’ human form – who is a high-level S.H.I.E.L.D. agent. The reports confirmed that Talos’ human form will indeed be Nick Fury’s boss. Since he is the boss of Nick Fury, he could possibly his mentor too which can possibly lead to a close relationship between them and that too a trusting one. Nick Fury may have served in U.S Army or as a CIA agent, but he doesn’t know the hard truth about being a spy yet i.e., you can’t trust anyone – not even your boss.

Will Talos Betrayal cost Nick Fury’s his left eye?

Nick Fury Photo

Captain Marvel can show how Nick Fury loses his left eye. The possible character which may have resulted in it is none other than the Skrull’s leader, Talos. Since he is a Skrull, he can shape-shift himself to someone Nick Fury should trust. The best one is his boss as they should be having a close relationship. Unfortunately, the young agent who has just started his time in the S.H.I.E.L.D., he doesn’t even know if aliens exist. So, he has no clue about his boss being an alien and that too a shape-shifter. Talos’ true goal is to help Skrulls take over Earth and not protect it with S.H.I.E.L.D. Hence, at some point in the movie, when his true plans will be exposed, he might betray Nick Fury at that point only.

Since Nick Fury in Captain Marvel is not the same as we have seen him in the last decade, Fury will be shocked to see the S.H.I.E.L.D. infiltrated(by Skrulls and Hydra both). He will be shocked to see his boss and possible mentor as a shape-shifter, Talos. He may lose his eye when he tries to thwart the Skrulls and Talos, to which he will get defeated with a permanent scar. This scar will be a reminder of his failure and betrayal. This will explain the statement from The Winter Soldier where he said, “The last time I trusted someone, I lost an eye”.

Nick Fury’s Trust Issues

Nick Fury Photo

Captain Marvel is the best chance for Marvel to set Fury’s entire arc in motion, and his nature of not trusting anyone easily and keeping a plan to himself. Nick Fury has been a mentor for several super heroes in the MCU. When S.H.I.E.L.D. falls to Hydra, Fury only trusted Captain America and Maria Hill. He didn’t even trust Black Widow at that time because of her spotty history. This nature of lack of trust has somehow made him what he is today as the director of S.H.I.E.L.D. Talos’ betrayal has evolved the old Fury as the man we see today in the Marvel movies.

Even if it costs him an eye, he is now open up to a whole new world. In the interview with Jackson, he said: “He understands that they’re not all enemies, and we do need to find allies who have specific kinds of skills that humans don’t have”. Maybe because of this, he placed his whole career on the backs of Avengers originally. Since Captain Marvel isn’t an origin story, it won’t hurt if they flesh out Nick Fury’s backstory in the movie.

As of now, there’s no confirmation if Fur’s eye loss will be included in the movie. But, with the opportunity to prove the Winter Soldier Line, Captain Marvel will be the best time to prove it. If it is included, then Talos has all the making to be the one responsible.
