What is QLED display? QLED vs OLED, Samsung QLED TV CES 2017


New technologies always amaze us, and technology keeps changing by the new ideas and innovation, whether its, replacement of fingerprint sensor by face recognition technology or replacement of LCDs to modern days LEDs. If we talk about the display panel technologies, it changed in a less interesting fashion at the start, from bulky Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) panels to Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) panels. And after replacements are more interesting. LCDs panel were replaced by energy efficient and more slim LED (Light Emitting Diode) display and further development of LED created OLED, POLED, AMOLED and QLED (Quantum Dot LED). QLED has been in the market since last year Samsung introduced its first QLED Smart TV at CES, 2017. And gave a tough competition to OLED panels on the basis of color reproduction and efficiency. So, let’s discuss about QLED more, by discussing, what is it? What’s benefit over other?


Quantum dot Light Emitting Diode display is not a new technology on the consumer level, but it was first used by the Korean tech giant, Samsung in its smart T.V, and it straight forward had a trademark of QLED. Technically, the display tech is almost like a simple LED panel, but it uses Quantum Dots instead of phosphorus to reproduce better color, but its not a emissive display.
You must be thinking that’s not enough about it! And What is Quantum Dot? – Quantum Dots are nano-sized crystals, made up of semi-conductors. How small? – Almost smaller than 1/10,000 of a single strand of human hair.

How this tech works?

Quantum dots are photo-active and, absorb and emit light very effectively. The light each quantum dot gives off is also very stable and pure, and of a specific, stable and pure color depending on the size of its core. To work they need a back light, as these dots don’t emit own light. The back light is given by the LED panels at the back. The small quantum dots are fabricated on a film, which is given light the LED panel.
How is it good for T.V? – All these things results in more color reproduction with more accuracy and precision as compared to LED panels. The contrast ratio is almost 1:1 with high black level and rich colors.


Talking about OLED first, the Organic Light Emitting Diode is a emissive display. The panel is made up of organic compounds that light up on getting electricity. The OLED panel doesn’t require any back light as in traditional LCD panel and like in QLED. As each pixel produce light of its own. Which offers a real black, results in high contrast with rich colors.

Let’s compare both on some parameters.


This parameter may not be seen as much important, but in comparing OLED and QLED, it will be a important part. Simply, the contrast ratio will be high when the display is able to show the real black as well as precise colors. The QLED display as we discussed above, needs a LED panel to produce a back light to activate the quantum dots. Though the contrast ratio is high, as it uses advance dimming technology, to dim back light at the region where the screen meant to be black, but still it can’t be real black. Where as the OLED shows a real black, as the pixel don’t even turn ON. So, there is no issue to get he real black. So, OLED has better contrast then QLED.


This is the another parameter which will decide which is better. The viewing angles are good in QLED but OLED have a great range of viewing angles, quality of image maintains upto 84 degrees, clearly OLED is better than QLED, in this too.


We all know that LED panels didn’t get brightness as a problem and QLED is using LED panels as back light, so, QLED can easily take over. But the question is, is they both can show the same color accuracy at high brightness. And answer is yes, QLED maintains it color reproduction quality at high brightness and with loosing color saturation, because of quantum dot technology. QLED has better brightness, with good color reproduction.


This is the only parameter where both of QLED and OLED have same performance. The color accuracy, precision and production is almost same under normal brightness condition.


This is the another important factor, as the purpose for which technology is developed, is to increase efficiency. We will include here the same logic, that OLED doesn’t require any backlight, and its light, so simply it will require less consumption of electricity. So, OLED is more energy efficient.

The Quantum Dot display is a new technology which is being used only by Samsung for it’s flagship smart TV. And it’s been a year, after its introduction at CES 2017. So, it may take some years for the pricing to cut down to some very affordable pricings.

The entry variant of QLED TV is SAMSUNG Q7F 55” priced at- $1,797 .
Another is the curved variant which get more expensive, SAMSUNG Q8C CURVED 65” – $3,297
SAMSUNG Q8C CURVED 75”- $4,797.
The prices of higher Q8 curved variants even go to $7,500+.
The price of Q9 curved 88” is listed $19,000 on Samsung’s website. The pricing is pretty high as compared to LG OLED display panel.


QLED is an amazing technology, with a great performance, a step towards showing reality with accurate color. And it’s mainly a brand by Samsung. And Samsung has been promoting this, since its launch in CES 2017. There is no sign where other this technology can be used as display, as it’s restricted to large screens for now, so, like OLED it can’t used in smartphones, laptops and fitness bands as OLED display. Talking specifically about QLED TV, there is a tough competition between Samsung’s QLED and LG OLED smart TV. Nothing much can be said, about QLED TV, as CES 2018 is here, Samsung may announce updated version. But for now, OLED is the winner, based on performance and efficiency.
