When Thanos reached Vormir with Gamora for Soul Stone, he was greeted by the Soul Stone’s guardian, cloaked in black with a familiar wraith-like voice. It was the Red Skull from the Captain America: The First Avenger. Fans were shocked to see Red Skull on Vormir. He then explains that how tesseract teleported him there. He then became the stonekeeper, the eternal guardian of the Soul Stone, bound to guide would-be wielders to its location, but never once able to claim it for his own. Thanos succeeded after sacrificing the one thing in the Universe he actually loved: his daughter Gamora. The Soul Stone came in the possession of Thanos, while everyone who tried failed. Thanos left Vormir afterwards, but what of Red Skull? Turns out he may very well return back to MCU!

While answering fan questions on Twitter to celebrate the digital home release of the MCU superhit film, the directors of the movie, Joe and Anthony Russo were asked about Red Skull and will he be able to leave the planet now. “Red Skull is free to leave Vormir,” the brothers confirmed, “and he is also free to pursue his desire for an Infinity Stone.”

As we saw in the First Avenger that Red Skull tried to take control of one of the Infinity Stones – The Tesseract aka the Space Stone. Which in turn led him to be imprisoned on Vormir. But now that he is free, the directors seem to hint at the fact that the villain might still be interested to gain control of the stones once again. If the Skull still seeks the Infinity Stones, then it’s possible the directors are teasing the character’s return in Avengers 4.

Currently, the stones are with Thanos who was shown sitting on an unknown planet after he obliterated half of the Universe.
