After about two years since the launch of Gear S3, Samsung is finally going to launch a new smartwatch this year. The successor of Gear S3, Gear S4 may launch as the Galaxy Watch.
The date is still not certain but considering that the Gear S3 was announced in August 2016, and the Gear S2 was announced in August of the year before that, it is expected that Samsung may launch Gear S4 ( or Galaxy Watch ) in August this year. Since Samsung has announced its Unpacked 2018 event on August 9 where the Galaxy Note 9 should appear, it is quite possible that we can see Gear S4 too.
Tizen or Wear OS?
Some rumours claim that the device will be running on the new Wear OS from Google whereas some suggest that it will be running on company’s own Tizen OS which was also seen on Gear S3. A noted Samsung leaker Ice Universe say that the next Samsung watch will run Google’s Wear OS. While it is still dicey to comment on the type of OS which will be powering Gear S4, it is most likely that it will feature Wear OS.
Samsung is expected to release two variants of the Gear S4, as it did with the S3, meaning a Classic model and a more rugged Frontier variant. It might come in 3 different shades Black, Silver and Gold. Samsung is also expected to push blood pressure measurment kit, built-in GPS, heart rate monitor and enhanced motion sensing for better sleep tracking. This new watch is likely to come with a 470mAh battery compared to 380mAh in Gear S3 just 300 mAh in Gear Sport. New watch is expected to come with more sleeker design and new display innovation as claimed by reports.
Last year’s Gear Sport cost $300 but a more feature packed Gear S3 Frontier cost around $350 so you can expect the new watch to get a price tag of about $350-$400.
