How does Vivo X20 Plus UD under display fingerprint works

Technology in smartphone has evolved a lot in the previous years, specifically talking about the display of the smartphones. Last year, Samsung launched it’s Galaxy S8 series and Galaxy Note 8 with Infinity Display. And Apple launched iPhone X with a need to end display. This incredibly increased screen to body ratio vanished the space for the fingerprint sensor in the front. For this company managed to put it in other positions, like back of the device, with the power button, and others. But Vivo has evolved a new way to feature a under display fingerprint scanner in device, which was also featured in CES 2018. You might wonder how this new technology works, so here we will be explaining,

How does the Vivo under display fingerprint works.

Vivo X20 Plus UD

Vivo introduced Vivo X20 Plus UD at the CES 2018 event, featuring the under display fingerprint sensor, using which user can unlock the device by just touching a part of the display at the bottom. The under display fingerprint unlocking system is so impressive and gives a glimpse of the future of the smartphone kingdom. But the performance of this tech is not so good, means it’s not faster as the fingerprint tech being used. But this is not a big issue, as this the first ever smartphone to feature this new tech and it will upgrade on progression of time.

What’s the Tech behind the under display fingerprint system.

Vivo X20 Plus has a OLED display, and other than the various optical advantages of the OLED display, Vivo used OLED display as it is the only type of display that can be used for under display fingerprint scanning. This is because the screen is thinner than the LCD screens and thus it’s best for this new tech. The under display fingerprint scanning system doesn’t has the sensors as in normal fingerprint sensors, actually it’s an optical sensor or more technically we can say, CMOS (image sensors) which are used in Cameras. So, basically it scans the optical image of the fingerprint patterns.

But as it is an optical sensor, so it needs a little light, the light falls on the fingerprint patterns and get reflect back in a design fashion and the sensor reminds that fashion. This is the reason that device uses a little amount of light on the part where the finger needs to be placed for scanning.

So, this is the whole process that runs inside the device. And all you need to do is, Touch to Unlock.

Future of under display fingerprint scanners:

The way that Vivo used this tech is amazing, though it’s a little slower than other but it can be upgraded in future. Using of Optical Scanner for fingerprint scanning is a older way, as it needs a little light to obtain the optical signals of the fingerprint pattern. The technology is older, but the way, it is used in Vivo X20 Plus is unique. And according to us, under display fingerprint scanning is a futuristic idea, which will be in trends soon, because all the launching phones are following the end to end display fashion like iPhone X with notch and recently Asus launched Asus Zenfone 5 in the MWC 2018 event, with a bezel-less display as in iPhone X. And in the race to provide the smartphone with best design, other companies may follow the under display fingerprint scanning system technology like Vivo X20 Plus.
